The Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games showcased Australian companies’ expertise in developing a world class sporting precinct within walking distance to the city centre.

The Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games established new benchmarks in the delivery of a major sporting event and in particular:

• games legacy, particularly sporting infrastructure legacy
• linking the sporting event, in particular the opening ceremony, to the city centre and the broader community
• a cultural program that engaged the whole community and ensured the event was more than sport
